Now you, my online friends, get to co-witness my frugal milk experiment.
For the first time ever, I found a gallon of organic milk today with 5 75 cent stickers on it. The "sell by date" was yesterday. But I know that sell by does not equal drink by date. This gallon was originally very overpriced, but with the $3.75 off, it came out to about $3. For a gallon of organic milk. Score!
Besides making dinner tonight with milk (homemade mac and cheese), and serving up bowls of cereal with milk for pre-dinner snacks, I needed a way to save this milk. If this were low-fat milk, I would not worry as my kids would drink it quickly. But since it is non-fat milk (the kind I drink and use in cooking) I knew we could not finish it before it goes bad.
I did not want to freeze the entire gallon, but wondered if I could freeze smaller amounts of it. Since I already freeze veggies in ice cube trays, why not milk? My hope is that I can use these "milk cubes" for baking and my morning coffee in the next few weeks.
What do you hypothesize? Is this a brilliant move or the idea of a fool (please, please don't choose the latter!)
Edited on Friday to add: It worked! And it turns out to be the perfect volume for my cup of coffee.

My mil froze milk for years with no problem. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I freeze milk all the time - just in case we run out. I can see that it could be convenient to use ice cubes, but since those are all in use for baby food we just freeze the whole bottle.
As i drink green tea, i dont often buy milk. So do exactly this, in case of visitors who have milk in their tea, and it works really well.
I experimented recently and froze a whole gallon of milk. In this house, we go through a gallon every other day, but I just wanted to see if it would work. Well, it did--except it takes about as long to thaw out a gallon of milk as it does to thaw out a turkey, LOL! But it's nice to know it's possible.
Your idea to do cubes is brilliant, and I think I'll do that next time. You don't want to be in this house in the morning when there's no milk for my husband's coffee...
I never heard of this, but you can freeze cheese, so why not freeze milk? Brilliant!
I like the idea of using them for coffee creamers. I freeze milk all the time - you have to shake it up really good after it thaws to get it mixed back together.

I freeze milk all the time when there's a bit left and we're going away for a while. I don't know that we've ever used it to drink afterwards, but it certainly works for cooking.
What a good idea -- the milk cubes in coffee. Did it work?
It should be fine! My grandma freezes her milk all the time with no problems. I never freeze ours because dh works in the warehouse of a dairy and gets our milk there and it has a long shelf life so it just sits in our fridge as we need it!
I've never tried it but I know lots of people who do.
Doing it in cubes for coffee is ingenious though!

Great idea! We go through a lot of milk here, so I don't know that we would need to freeze any but I think its a cool idea.
