After spending approximately $10 to make a lasagna, I knew I needed a less costly option to making tomato sauce. My grocery store sells cans of crushed tomatoes (slightly under 2 lbs) for $1.81. This price has always seemed steep, but I hadn't found a cheaper option. Until last weekend. Then I found a 10 lb. can of crushed tomatoes at Costco for under $3.
What a deal! But what to do with 10 lbs? I decided to spend the entire afternoon making a huge vat of tomato sauce. There was so much sauce that it started bubbling out of the crockpot.
In all, this 10 lb can made about 4 meals worth of sauce. 3 of the 4 were frozen.
At last! A cheaper way to make one of my favorite food items (I'm known to eat it straight out of the pot).

Edited to add recipe:
Cook 2-3 onions (diced) and chopped garlic (lots) in oil until slightly brown
Add 10 pound can of crushed tomatoes
Add 2 small cans of tomato paste
Add frozen cubes of carrots, spinach, etc
Sprinkle in a generous amount of salt, pepper, dried basil, dried oregano, garlic powder
Let simmer on low heat or in a crock pot for 20 minutes--several hours (depending on when dinner is to be served!)

Good job and great idea! There's nothing like finding a cheaper way to make meals!
Wow--never thought of that! I hear you on the expensive lasagna--my recipe is from my mother-in-law and it calls for 2# of cheese and 3# of meat--we actually freeze half or we'd never eat it all.
'Tis my good fortune, however, to freeze garden tomatoes every fall so I have an abundance for sauces all year round.
Tomato. Sauce. Yum.
I love freezing stuff--it's so great to be able to go to the freezer when you just don't feel like cooking.
How big is your freezer? You've shown us the wipe board for freezer management - now I want to see the freezer itself. I can't believe you can pack all this food in there. Are you... Wonder Woman?
Also, I think it takes a very special person to not go mad when trying to search through a packed freezer for whatever they KNOW is in there. Is your freezer exceptionally well organised and labelled? Mine's more random than an old folks' home lucky dip.
Sass E-Mum, my outside freezer seems pretty big. It is the kind where the top opens up and everything is just thrown in. It is not well organized. We go out to it wearing gloves and just start digging. This is painful in the winter because we are out in the cold digging through the cold. The sauce fit fine in my little freezer above the fridge. I didn't even add it to my freezer white board, because that is for the outdoor things. So, alas, I do not have an organized freezer.
Nice to meet you, cc. I'm more of a Charmed fan than a Buffy fan. Wonder if there was a 'Pheobe' heroine? I'm glad you didn't take offense to my disappointment. Now we can be friends.
Believe it or not I have been known to jar my own tomatos. I accept all of the applause anyone wants to give me on that. It is great because we pick the tomatos at a local farm and they are like $5 per 5 gallon bucket. We bring them home and jar them. I have cases of jarred tomatoes and I just pull one out when I need to make a sauce. (We do have a farm in my family, but that is just cows. It does provide me with all the hamburger I could ever need, though.)
and a workout, to boot, just lifting that can! :)
I make and freeze all of my own spagetti sauce. I freeze them in meal portions in ziplock bags. They take up less space in my freezer!
Thanks for popping over to my place. I will pop back to yours to find out more soon. (Like, is it normal for a three year old to say 'felection' for 'reflection'?) So useful to know a speech therapist!
I do the same thing. And to be honest with you, nothing tastes better than your own, chemical/preservative free sauce. Plus, added bonus? You have some for neighbors or friends in the event of a crisis. ;)
Thanks for stopping by the blog, when you see the update to my step-class saga you may wish you'd never found me. * grins * I'm like the accidental tourist, times 1000. At least I'm alive though. ;)
Nice idea!
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
My youngest son Daniel had to take speech for about 5 years, so as a mother I just want to say how much I appreciate what you do.
God Bless!
Amy:)
I'm all about economic cooking! Thanks for the tip and for commenting on my blog. It's good to know that there are other addicts out there!
wow! i wouldn't have thought of that! Great idea!
I love that idea! I was wondering if you'd be willing to share your recipe for tomato sauce?
We love buying the huge can of diced tomatoes from Sam's for around $3.00 and making a huge batch of salsa. YUM!!
Would love to have your recipe:)
This sounds like a great recipe and great idea. I will give it a try. Thanks for sharing. =)
