My rice cooker, my friend

In light of the global rice crisis, and rice hoarding here in the United States, I've been thinking about how much I like rice and how much I'll miss it if it becomes really expensive.
I became an "honorary Asian" beginning in college. Really. 3/4 of my friends were Asian. I would often sit in the cafeteria and be the only non-Asian in the group. One time I remember a friend commented that, "Look! Everyone here is Asian!" It had to be pointed out that I was not ethnically Asian, at which point she said something like, "but you practically are." Another time a group of us went to a Chinese restaurant and were collectively insulted when the hostess gave me and ONLY me a fork and knife.

Then I became Asian by marriage (and therefore name) and motherhood.

So it makes sense that one of our wedding presents was a rice cooker. A rice cooker? Seemed like a waste of an appliance. Couldn't I just use a pot and make minute rice on the stove?

Oh, how I learned of my naivity!

The rice cooker is a fabulous, but under-used and mis-understood by those of European descent. With it, rice cooks well, with no maintenance. And (this is key) it does not burn! Some rice cookers are even programmable. It is cheaper and easier to make than bread, at least for now.... I buy the rice in bulk (half white and half brown) and it costs much less than boxed rice. Rice is the main food staple of the majority of the world. Why not yours?

I have a rice cooker someone gave me sitting in the box still. I haven't seem to bring myself to use it! We don't eat a lot of rice, so that could be why. So it is worth it?

I have the exact rice cooker pictured on your post!! Since you apparently use yours more than I do.... do you have any tips on how to make it NOT spit thru the steam vent the entire time it's cooking? Seriously, that mess is the reason I don't use mine, I just wait out the 20-30 minutes for it to cook on the stove.

We love our rice cooker! It keeps the rice nice and warm. I love to make congee in mine,it is much easier to clean up after than if I used a big pot.

I totally remember the fork and knife incident - Lucky Garden, right? :-p

I used my rice cooker in college to cook pasta. We use our rice cooker a lot too (we make pasta on the stove top though). It is programmable so I can put rice and water in and not have to remember to make rice later in the day.

Bloggin' mama, I totally know how to fix that! 1st, I add a little salt and butter to the rice before it cooks (I AM of European decent after all!). That reduces the boiling slightly. Then I put the rice cup (measuring cup that came with our rice cooker) on top of the steam valve. It makes it so there is not steam spitting! Voila! It only took 8 years to figure that one out! LOL

Stephanie, I totally think its worth it, and the kids love rice. Easy. Cheap. Yahoo!

I love LOVE LOVE LOVE my rice cooker. Before, when I lived Down South, we used this big pot steamer thing that is designed for rice, but isn't really that great because the rice sticks to the bottom of it. When I got married, hubby finally introduced me to this wonderful appliance. NO STIRRING! NO STICKING! ONLY RICEY GOODNESS!

Oh yeah, I learned of it's use when I became friends with a Hmong girl and she helpfully englightened my white bread brain. I hate white rice, but any other flavor is mmm mmmm good!

Our daughter is the only one in our family that doesn't like rice, but the rest of us loves it, especially our 3 year old son. I don't have a rice cooker, but it's something that I've always wanted to get and try it.

We just got one! It is a great tool.
When I hear about the rice shortage my first thought was to go out and buy my supply of rice when it probably would take us 25 years to go through 3 bags lol

I have often wanted a rice cooker but have nowhere to store it so I still do the old pan and lid routine. But I would love to have a burner free for cooking other things while the rice is cooking, plus those rice cookers can hold a lot.

You know, that's one thing I ALWAYS wondered if it was worth it or if it would just consume cupboard space that I don't have.

You've inspired me to get it. Now let's hope I can afford the rice. :)

That's it! I'm sold! I want one now! I love rice, and now I want a rice cooker!

I'm Cajun, so growing up we had rice at every meal. I really only ever had any other type of starch once or twice a year. Even "chicken spagetti" went over rice.

I let my ex keep the rice cooker, so I haven't had one in 5 years or so. It forced me to finally learn how to make it on the stove, at least.

I honestly didn't know you could make rice on the stove until I moved away from home and Louisiana. I don't know if anyone where I am from doesn't have one!

I would like to invest in one again at some point, because we eat a bit of rice, but I make white, brown, jasmine, and basmati all regularly. I have only ever made white in a pot. Can you make other types in there?

Okay, I wanna know where you get your rice half white and half brown in bulk? Do you buy them separately? I always buy a big bag to last of several months, but have never seen big bags of brown. Tell, tell! ~Jen

The best way I have found to keep the rice cooker from spitting is to not add too much water. Any time I add too much water it spits like crazy. Thanks for the tip about putting a cup over the hole. That's a great idea! ~Jen (aka the GIMP 4 digi-scrappers)
