The Stranger is by one of my all time favorite author/illustrators,
Chris Van Allsburg (author of Polar Express). And I'm really excited that I FINALLY made a unit for it that I love! I enjoy using this book with the older grades (3rd and up) because of the incredible illustrations as well as the great inferencing that occurs.
Who is the Stranger??? We never find out exactly, but there are many mysteries that surround him. Can you or your kids figure him out?
I just finished my unit and want to give away the vocabulary from the book for free! Go to my TpT site and click on "Download Preview" to get the free vocabulary! These are great for playing card games (matching, war, memory, etc.).
12 vocabulary cards with picture definitions
1 vocabulary worksheet to fill in
16 irregular past tense verb cards from the story
1 irregular past tense worksheet to fill in
32 mixed /s, z/ cards from the story
32 mixed /r/ cards from the story
1 inference board game full of great "why" questions
1 character description worksheet
1 setting description worksheet
8 story comprehension cards
1 story map for practicing retelling
1 story retell rubric, specific to this story to measure data!

As an extra incentive, the first 5 people that write a review of this unit on TpT and email me (speechforme at gmail dot com), can choose one other item from my store at no charge. Just let me know what you want and I'll email it to you free. ;)

I can't wait to buy and use this with my students. I feel like I spend so much time making materials for my students on Microsoft word and Boardmaker but they never turn out quite like I would like them to. Would you mind sharing what program you use to make your materials (especially the vocab templates)? Thanks and I aways look forward to your blog emails that I receive!
